Right now, Android phones have the dubious honor of being both popular and problematic: The phones have the largest portion of the smartphone market, and are also subject to the highest percentage of mobile device malware. In 2011, Android totaled 47 percent of the total smartphone malware. As of March 2013, that number has skyrocketed and the Android platform is now the target of 92 percent of mobile malware. For the sake of comparison, Apple accounts for only 0.7 percent of the mobile malware market. The growing use of personal mobile devices in private enterprise workplaces and for federal and state employees makes it vital to get the Android malware problem under control.
