Taking Care of Your Antique Pocket Watch

If you have a digital watch, then it is pretty easy to look after. Keep it clean and change the battery whenever it needs it. If you have a solar powered watch or even a kinetic powered watch, these are even easier as all you need to do is keep them clean as there is no battery to change. If you have an antique pocket watch or other type of watch with mechanical movements inside, then this is a bit more complicated to look after. With these workings being a finely tuned piece of mechanical engineering, the average person would ruin the watch if they took it apart and tried to clean them by themselves. If you look after your watch regularly, then it will require less maintenance by a qualified clock maker, which will also save you some money!

Taking care

There are things that we can do to help take care of your pocket watch, especially if you use it in your everyday life.
• Wind Daily – You should make sure that you wind your watch every day, taking great care to make sure that you do not over wind it. If you do over wind the watch, then you can cause damage to the inner workings of the mechanism.
• The Cover – If your pocket watch has a cover then be careful not to over extend the cover and damage the springs. If your watch does not have a cover, then always keep it in your pocket with the face of it facing you. Make sure there is nothing else in your pocket that can damage the front of the pocket watch.
• Perfumes and Deodorants – It is also very important that you make sure that your pocket watch does not come into contact with any perfumes of deodorants. This is because these can affect the crystal inside the mechanism and they can also damage  to the metal piece , as well.
• Storage – When you are not wearing your watch and need to store it, keep it in a small box or a pouch which will keep it protected until you require it again.
• Wearing – If you are going to wear the pocket watch then you will need to make sure that you also use a chain or fob to make sure it doesn’t fall to the floor and get damaged. As previously said, make sure the pocket with your watch in does not have anything else such as keys or coins which could damage the watch.
• Keep it clean – Make sure that you regularly clean the outside of the watch using a soft cloth. Give it a polish and get all of the fingerprints off of it, so it shines like new.
By taking good care of your pocket watch, you can make sure it is in fantastic condition for years to come, and it will be less likely to need to be cleaned by a professional. This could become something which you pass down through your family for generations to come.

Professional cleaning

Taking Care of Your Antique Pocket Watch
You will most likely need to consult a professional at some point in your watches life, to get it professionally cleaned and oiled. There used to be a time when you can easily find a good quality watchmaker and repairer as all you needed to do was go to your local jewelers. Sadly this level of craftsmanship is not as readily available as it used to be. Most jewelers still offer the service, and if they cannot do in on site they will use a third party to carry out the service for them. It is a good idea to find out before committing as to where the work will be done if they are using a third party if you can find out their details you may be able to approach them directly and potentially save some money. Always make sure that you get an estimate as well and be prepared to pay a fair amount as the work is going to be carried out by a highly skilled craftsman. If you search the internet you will be able to find videos showing you how to do it yourself, but unless you have the experience and tools to do it, you may damage the watch which will cost you a lot more to fix. Look after your watch properly and you will be less likely to need the services of a professional clock and watch maker.
