DSLR Canon 5d Mark II : Reshaping Cinematography

DSLRs are the cameras that have unarguably exploded onto the photography scene to the great benefit of photographers everywhere. They are a great benefit to professionals as well as amateurs who are still experimenting with the medium.
But they have come to work in, perhaps, a rather unexpected way.  The release of the Canon 5D Mark II in 2008, to the surprise of many, was discovered to be astoundingly proficient at capturing moving images, and emanating onto the cinematography scene as a DSLR that captured truly beautiful images of a professional caliber.  Cameras of incredible adeptness, anyone with even a hint of talent, equipped with this, will be able to capture beautiful imagery.
DSLR Canon 5d Mark II
The Canon 5D Mark II was undoubtedly a revolution in terms of cinematography.  But what are the functions and features that make it such a success?

Quick Review of Canon 5D Mark II

  1. Shallow Depth of Field.  With a HD DSLR one can shoot through a selection of 35mm lens that allow one to attain the aesthetically stunning shallow depth of field often used professionally.
  2. Shooting 24fps.  Capable of shooting at 24fps these DSLRs match professional cameras in terms of frame rate, allowing it to also match the subtle and seamless motion found in professional cinematography.
  3. Night-time Shooting.  The Canon 5D Mark II is fitted with full frame 35mm sensors that allow more light to filter into HD video they are used to record, creating bright and breathtaking imagery.
  4. Small Size.  Compared to the bulky and cumbersome equipment typically used to record video the DSLR is compact, light-weight and transportable.  Whilst one may use it in conjunction with other equipment said equipment is not essential to it’s use, unlike previously used cameras.
  5. Low Cost.  Buying even expensive and high end DSLR’s like the Canon 5D Mark II still works out to be considerably less than purchasing professional camcorders which must be equipped with equally expensive depth of field adapters and so on.
As a testament to the capabilities of these DSLR cameras they are not merely used by photographers wishing to experiment with cinematography or young and independent filmmakers, they are also frequently used in the production of high budget and high profile film and television the likes of House,  The Avengers and ParaNorman were all shot using a Canon 5D Mark II  camera, in part if not for the entire production, due to the beautiful imagery they are capable of capturing.
Since the release of the Canon 5D Mark II Canon has released a series of cameras that build upon or augment certain features of the Canon 5D Mark II aiding digital cinematography, for example the Canon 7D is a camera with many of the benefits of a Canon 5D Mark II in addition to being extremely weatherproof, and capable of recording at 1080p in HD which makes it a fantastic camera to be used when recording anything in slow motion.
Canon has very recently released what is essentially an upgrade of the Canon 5D Mark II, being called the Canon 5D Mark III and most of it’s features involve having fixed problems prevalent on it’s predecessor to further improve it’s performance and the quality of film rendered.
If the wide-spread use of the Canon DSLRs are not proof enough of their incredible capabilities when capturing video then the films produced themselves are, without question, carving out a definitive place for the DSLR within the cinematography world… just take a look for yourself.
