The book tells the story of wealthy businessman Jay Gatsby and his obsession with former flame Daisy Buchannan. Set in 1920s New York, the tale is the epitome of Jazz Age culture, the Roaring Twenties and the American Dream so many people in the US were desperate to achieve.

The characters’ lives are full of parties, diamonds, cocktails and drama… and this is reflected in the glamorous clothing, sequinned dresses and strings of jewels the women draped around their necks. Obviously when a film this big is launched the fashion world follows suit, so here’s how you can create your own Gatsby-inspired wardrobe to dazzle at summer parties.

Beading is another good one and there are loads of dresses around at the moment that would help you channel this trend. For a dramatic look, search for black or navy dresses with lighter pearly beading that will really stand out.

The other thing you need to look out for when it comes to finding the perfect 1920s dress is pleats. These carefully pressed folds of material are very flattering as they’ll skim over bits you want to hide and create fantastic movement within the skirt of a dress. Aim for just below the knee for a more grown-up daytime look.

Fur was big news in the 20s and there are plenty of faux fur garments around these days to ensure you can recreate the look. Cover up in a classic beige knee-length coat with a simple cord tie around the waist and a dramatic fur collar.

The 1920s were a time when women started moving away from the restrictive Victorian corsets and layer upon layer of skirts in favour of comfortable shapes, short, loose dresses and more mannish tailoring.

A classic navy suit with tapered leg trousers will see you through any kind of formal event, while a shirt buttoned all the way up worn under a buttoned-up cardigan is another winning look for smarter occasions.

Jewellery will be a key part of your outfit if you want to create a 1920s vibe. Long strings of pearls are essential and you can rope a few around your neck to get a decorative, costume jewellery-type feel. Feathers are another must-have and there’s no reason why you can’t weave a feather through the links of a necklace to create your own jewellery. Or, buy a jewelled hairband or fascinator for an easy yet glamorous way to wear the look – perfect for a wedding. Elaborately jewelled hair clips and slides are another easy way to add a bit of bling.

Heels are a must with a flapper dress and T-bar shoes will give an authentic 1920s feel. Any colour goes here really and while black is obviously a classic look, brighter hues will inject a modern touch.
