Read on to know more.
Search Engine - Not many people are aware of what a cornerstone is. If you ask anyone what a cornerstone is, most of them will not be able to clearly define what a cornerstone is. Some may say that it is a stone in a corner of the structure; others may just stare blankly at you. This is understandable as not everyone is in the construction business or has built a home from the ground up. In construction, the cornerstone is the most important stone to be laid in the foundation as all other stones and brickwork is set with reference to this foundation stone. This principle also applies to an SEO campaign, where proper keyword research and selection of keywords / phrases / search terms in search is essential and crucial to the success of an SEO campaign to achieve Top ranking in search engines.

An SEO campaign for a business cannot be implemented without using Keywords and phrases relevant to the business. These Keywords / phrases that are used in search engines by people are the cornerstones that lay the foundation for achieving Top rankings, and thus acquiring clients and an increase in sales. Researching keywords / phrases in search engine that are used along with monthly searches for each gives you a rough idea about the importance of the keyword. For example, if Keyword A has 1000 searches per month, this means that at least 1000 people have used that keyword / phrase to search for your product / service and it is a good choice for an SEO campaign. But if a Keyword / phrase has just 100 searches per month, that keyword / phrase will not be a good choice for an SEO campaign. The best tool for researching keywords is the Google Adwords tool. There are many other tools, paid and free, that you can use for keyword research.
Although keywords / phrases with high searches (1000 to 100, 000+) are good for an SEO campaign and should be included in the keywords list, you must also check the competition for a particular keyword / phrase. The competition for a keyword / phrase is the number of websites that are using that particular keyword / phrase for their SEO campaign. If keywords / phrases have high searches, it is very likely that hundreds of thousands, even millions of other websites too are trying to rank for that keyword / phrase. This makes it tougher to rank a website for the particular keyword / phrase.
Think of it like this, if you have a business in the city of New York and were trying to attract customers from just New York City, it would be easy. Your business would only have to compete against other businesses in New York City. But if you wanted to attract customers from all over the State, it would be a bit more difficult as your business would be competing with businesses from around the State. Now think about this situation on a countrywide scale, or even a global scale. The difficulty of trying to rank in Search engines and acquiring clients and achieving sales gets more difficult as the scope increases and scales up.
Therefore a balance has to be maintained while selecting keywords / phrases. Selecting too many keywords / phrases with too high competition will make the SEO campaign more difficult and time consuming to achieve Top rankings and will also be expensive. Selecting too many keywords / phrases with low searches (less than 500) will also not give the desired results of substantial increase in customers and sales and thus will affect the ROI of the SEO campaign. Selecting a mix of highly searched keywords and Long tail keywords will provide better results and ROI. Long tail keywords are actually phrases that comprise of 3 or more words used by people in searches. For example, while ‘Moving Services’ would be an ideal phrase for an SEO Campaign for a moving business, it will have very high competition. But ‘Moving Services New York’ is a Long tail phrase which is specific to a location and will have lower competition as only moving businesses based in New York will use this phrase.
As you have read here, researching and selecting the right keywords / phrases for you SEO campaign will provide the best results and will lay the Cornerstone of a successful SEO campaign to achieve Top rankings in search engines.
